Big Red Barn at the Texas Agricultural & Heritage Center
Location: 390 Cordova Road, Seguin, Texas 78155 POC: Janice Knobles – jmknobles@yahoo.com Date & Time: Every Friday Morning (weather permitting) – Summer Hours 7:30 AM until finished – Winter Hours 8:15 AM until finished Task: Duties for the vegetable garden are weeding and trimming, mulching, re-planting, Re-creating new beds. Located here is not only the Master Gardener Educational Demonstration Garden, but also an Herb Garden & a Certified Butterfly Garden. Additionally inside the Big Red Barn Extension building is the Master Gardener Kiosk which has a number of flyers and information about the Master Gardeners program and services. One of our Certified Master Gardeners also gives nutritional education talks here. The garden is maintained for the sole purpose to use as Educational Presentations for Master Gardener programs, School Tours, Pecan Festival and Ag Festival. The produce harvested each week is all donated to the Christian Cupboard in Seguin. The area encompasses large vegetable, herb, butterfly, and flower plots. The group meets on Friday mornings and other times as needed. They communicate the times and work tasks through email. Some jobs necessary to its upkeep are: •Planting and care of plants, weeding, watering, maintaining the drip irrigation system.•Harvesting and delivering the produce to the Christian Cupboard
•Hand watering during hot, dry conditions
•Acting as docents for fall and spring student education tours over a timeline of 2-4 weeks each season.
•Volunteering as docent for Pecan Fest, end of October, to answer questions and to promote Guadalupe County Master Gardeners.
